Despite the eruption of Icelandic volcano the pre-EAU Prostate HistoScanning™ information exchange forum went ahead almost as planned...

Pre-EAU Prostate HistoScanning™ Information exchange forum
To foster networking, collaboration and sharing of best-practices amongst Prostate HistoScanning™ users, AMD and BK Medical hosted a first information exchange forum in Barcelona (E). The forum also provided an opportunity for AMD to showcase developments of HistoScanning™ which will be launched later this year.
Prostate HistoScanning™ users shared their study results and clinical experience. The discussions covered clinical protocols and best practice. The users agreed that the personal investment required to develop the skills required to use HistoScanning™ has proven to be most rewarding.
EAU conference and exhibition
Prostate HistoScanning™ was featured in two independent poster presentations and in the ESUT live surgery session:
- NØRGAARD et al. “Can HistoScanning™ help in the assessment of patients with raised serum PSA level?: a pilot study.”1 This pilot study looked at patients with high PSA and no history of prostate disease. Prostate HistoScanning™ was performed in addition to the routine biopsy scheme. The investigators found that the positivity of biopsies steadily increased with total HistoScanning ™ volumes.
- SPETHMANN et al. “Accuracy of computer-aided transrectal ultrasonography detection (HistoScanning) of prostate cancer in the predication of a negative margin in radical prostatectomy patients.”2 This study by researchers from the Martini Klinik led by Dr. Salomon in Hamburg focused on the ability of Prostate HistoScanning™ to predict whether a nerve sparing procedure would be appropriate in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP).
- ZÁTURA et al. at the ESUT live surgery session “New imaging-guided techniques of prostate biopsy (including HistoScanning™, C-TRUS, elastography, target)” wherein Prostate Histoscanning™”3 featured in live transmission from Fundacio Puigvert hospital in Barcelona to the EAU auditorium. The challenge was for Prostate HistoScanning™ to predict the location and size of lesions in a patient who was about to undergo a radical prostatectomy procedure. HistoScanning showed a good correlation with location of the tumour when the results were compared to histopathology after surgery.
AMD and BK Medical shared an exhibition stand at the tradeshow which was busy throughout the conference indicating a high level of interest in Prostate HistoScanning™. Visitors to the stand had the opportunity to work on case studies and review the clinical evidence in the HistoScanning™ study area.
